Dear Nazril and Sazzy,

I felt goosebumps as I watched you danced from my seat at the far end of the hall tonight. Your stage presence, your performance, your energy that radiated from your dances, put everyone in the audience at awe with you. Your were amazing. You were at center stage, and the other couple paled in comparison with you. But alas! the rule of the game is such that the coveted prize that should be yours turned elusive and went elsewhere.

All is not lost though. You might not have won the first prize, but you have won the hearts of many. Good things that you have done will never be lost, your kind act takes root, and every bit of love and kindness you have shown will come right back to you, for God knows.

Thank for the RM15,000 that you have worked so hard for our association. It will go a long way in sustaining our association. We are truly honored and blessed to be chosen by you. You are always the winner in our eyes. Thanks also for the cheer and hope that you have given to the Parkinson community in the country.

May you and your family have wonderful and blessed 2010.

We have made it to the finals and we would love to have our supportive fans and voters come out and join us for our final performance on Sehati Berdansa Season 3 which will be held at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre on 26 December 2009 (Saturday).

Nights of Dancing Togetherness

On Saturday the night of Dec 20^th 2009, I found myself in front of the idiot box glued on the reality show Malam Sehati Berdansa (for want of a better one may roughly be translated as ‘Nights of Dancing Togetherness’ or thereabouts )

This was one of the rare occasions that I allowed myself the luxury of TV time. And I managed to sit through the whole show for a good reason.

It was mainly to see how my favourite pair Nazril and Sazzy were doing. They were the early favourites and they managed to hold on tenaciously to their position. According to my beloved wife Shadah (who had never missed a single episode) Nazril and Sazzy were awarded 100 points by a ‘jury’ twice before.

This happened again on Saturday night for a third time when Fauziah Latif awarded them 100 points for the ‘romantic’ sequence, one of two dance sequences they had to do. They came away with good credentials that night.

OP (Old Putera) Nazril Mohd Idrus was a tiny tot way back in the mid ‘70s when I first knew of him. His late father Allahyarham Mohd Idrus Ahmad (we were colleagues at the NPC) and mom Rohani were family friends. Together with others at the NPC then ( namely Arshad and Khalidah, Allahyarham Ruslan and Siti Hawa Salleh (now Datuk, Dr), Ibrahim and Sharifah , Ahmad Berek and Aishah, Tembun and Aminah, and OP Mahyudin and Rohani (now Dr) ) there were frequent family gatherings. OP Nazril was barely 3 years old then and his brother Naza a few years older.

We did not get to meet as a group when I later left the NPC to join another organization. OP Nazril in the meantime grew up, became an OP, became a Chartered Accountant and became the Chief Consultant of his own outfit in Damansara Perdana. What a small world!

In the case of Sazzy, it is still a small world pleasantly enough. Her uncle, OP Shamsul Qamar Tan Sri Kadir was my contemporary in the early ‘60s. We were both at Pasar Road Primary, Victoria Institution and the RMC.

The last I met OP Shamsul was some years ago when I went to visit him at Kg Lubuk Kelubi in Ulu Langat. He had the foresight of acquiring a few acres of prime land which he converted into a number of fish ponds. He had an ingenious way of getting clean, clear, and fresh water for his fish ponds by connecting a network of pipes from a mountain stream on higher grounds from across the road to his land. The anglers who frequented the ponds (he charged them a fee then) must have been attracted by the fresh, pure and unpolluted water ( I wonder if it is still on as it was quite some time ago) Incidentally, Sazzy’s father is OP (Dato’) Shamsul Falak. I did not get to meet him though as he joined the RMC much later in the late ‘60s.

So much for the digression.

It is now confirmed that the top two couples, OP Nazril and Sazzy and Sein and Nana will be dancing for the coverted title next week ie the 10^th and final week.

One more fact that needs mentioning. OP Nazril was awarded the Board of Governor’s Prize in 1991. (awarded to a Putera who excelled in sports) In the course of the nine weeks, in the Malam Sehati Berdansa he had exploited his sporting prowess to good effect (which was equally matched by Sazzy)

Their agility, rough and tumble at times but balanced with delicate movements mostly, was just poetry to see and of course their easily recognisible good looks would put them on a higher pedestal.

OP Nazril and Sazzy are up against an outsider in Sein and Nana. The couple who was eliminated last Saturday night, Isma and Zul had consistently chalked up good ratings before but they faltered when it mattered.

All goes to show that OP Nazril and Sazzy (even though favourites), must stamp their authority next week. There are no two ways about it. While we, (‘budak boys’ and OPs everywhere) are solidly behind you.

What type of organization is Malaysian Parkinson's Disease Association?
MPDA is the first non-governmental and patient-based organization set up on 12th September 1994 as support group for people with Parkinson and their caregivers in the country. It is also the third of its kind in Asia after Japan and Hong Kong at the time of its incorporation.

The Association was initially registered as the Parkinson's Disease of Selangor and Federal Territory (PERSATUAN PARKINSON SELANGOR DAN WILAYAH PERSEKUTUAN) with the Registrar of Societies of Malaysia bearing the Registration No: 5642/94 Selangor. In 1996, the name of the association was changed to Malaysian Parkinson's Disease Association (PERSATUAN PARKINSON MALAYSIA) to be more representative of the Parkinson community in the country. It was officially launched on 6th April 1996 by the then Minister of Health of Malaysia, YB Dato' Chua Jui Meng. In October 2005, it received its tax-exempt status from the Inland Revenue Department of Malaysia.

In the early years of the association, the Secretariat was located at the homes of members due to its limited financial resources. Today, it is located at its rented premises, a single-storey corner lot terrace house located in Happy Gardens, Old Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur since October 2005. It is a place which we called our "Parkinson Center".

As at 31st October 2008, MPDA has a total registration of 637 members comprising 376 people with Parkinson, 134 caregivers and 127 supporters. In terms of gender, there are 293 males and 344 females.

The main objectives of MPDA are:

To provide educational and emotional support to people with Parkinson and their families;
To promote self-management of their Parkinson's condition by patients and their families, consistent with the best medical advice;
To facilitate the provision of suitable professional help and advice to people with Parkinson and their families

Any person interested in furthering the objectives of the Association of at least 18 years of age, residing or working in Malaysia is eligible for ordinary membership on payment of an Annual Membership Fee. There are four different classes of membership:

People with Parkinson;
Caregiver;
Supporter; and
Corporate

How can the MPDA help you?
Consistent with its objectives, MPDA provides the following educational and support services

a) Health education for people with Parkinson and their caregivers

Generally, the Malaysian public knows very little about Parkinson's Disease . Thus, people with Parkinson are often anxious and scared when doctors tell them that they have Parkinson's Disease. Some of them think that they will get paralyzed very soon.

We educate people with Parkinson and their caregivers about Parkinson's Disease so that they can understand and cope with the various aspects of the illness. We also give up-to-date and reliable information on the various health services available in Malaysia for people with Parkinson /caregivers, some examples are: physiotherapy, home visits, medications, and brain surgery.

b) Moral support for people with Parkinson and their caregivers.

Parkinson Disease results in significant mental distress to both the patients and their caregivers. The MPDA is a place where people with Parkinson and caregivers share their experience and knowledge with each other. People with Parkinson help and give moral support to each other to cope with the illness. Most importantly, experienced patients/caregivers are the best councilors to newly diagnosed Parkinson's Disease patients and their caregivers. By becoming members of MPDA, people with Parkinson will know that they are not alone.

What are the activities of MPDA?
The Association organizes the following activities:

Monthly Support Group Meetings which incorporate medical and healthcare talks/lectures at Pantai Medical Center, Jalan Pantai Baru, Kuala Lumpur. The speakers are neurologists , doctors and other health professionals. The Monthly Meetings are usually held on Saturdays between 3.00 p.m. and 5.00 p.m. Other activities include physical exercises such as Taiji Qigong, demonstration/practice in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, video sessions etc. This is also the time for patients/caregivers to interact with each other especially during tea time.

Newsletter (Berita Parkinson) is published once every three months. This newsletter is free and will be sent to all members by mail.

Other activities:

The Association's phone line is open during office hours to answer queries from members and non-members; senior members will give telephone counseling (in Bahasa Malaysia/English/Mandarin) when requested;
The Association's website www.mpda.org.my provides information about Parkinson's Disease and MPDA, and it has linkages to other Parkinson's Disease websites in the Internet;
The Association runs a small library at the Parkinson Center for members to borrow/return reference books/magazines/video cassette /VCD on various aspect of Parkinson's Disease - Reference materials in Chinese are also available;
The MPDA hosted the First International Symposium of the Asian and Pacific Parkinson's Disease Association (APPDA), in Kuala Lumpur on 4th - 5th March 1997 Ten countries participated at the inaugural meeting which included members from Australia, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore, South Korea, and Thailand. The event was a great success and attracted as many as 450 delegates from the Asia-Pacific regions.
Subsequent International Symposia of the APPDA were held in Tokyo (1999), Hong Kong (2001), Korea (2003), Australia (2005), and Singapore (2007). The primary objective is to foster international collaboration in the Asia-Pacific region to educate the public and the healthcare professionals about Parkinson's Disease and its management, promotion of public awareness and enhancement of community care of Parkinson's Disease.

My First dance steps!

I have bad handwriting, i can't draw, don't sing, I don't dance... and here i am getting into a "REALITY" dancing competition! Gotta be kidding me!

When we received the call from Astro 3 years ago, i actually laughed it off because i just couldn't see myself doing it.. Here's a boy who in his teenage years went to army school, university and working life as an Accountant without any form of 'artistic' endeavors, why would i want to take part in something that i literally "buta" at?

However, I have to give myself credit for my "competitiveness" and "fair go" attitude! It runs in my blood!... my mama once said to her friend, she'd never worry for her second child; dump him in Alaska, he'll have fun with the eskimos! Completely true! I am a person who takes up a challenge anytime!

And so came the Sehati Berdansa challenge! After numerous calls from Astro, Sazzy and I decided to take it heads on! especially it is for a cause, to support Parkinson Society of Malaysia...

Satu Ikatan, Satu Debaran, the journey begins....
